Southern Baja California Surfing
Information and Surf Sports
Southern Baja
California has some excellent surfing, particularly on a south or
southwest swell during the hurricane season. The water and air are
comfortable year round along the corridor and East Cape. The West Cape
and the area around Todos Santos can get a little cold during the winter
and early spring months. During the winter and spring months, your best
bet is to travel northwest near the Todos Santos area where the west and
northwest swells from the winter storms hit. During late summer and
early fall the cape and East Cape can be incredible. The East Cape past
San Jose del Cabo is very secluded and untouched and offers some
excellent opportunities for perfect, warm and uncrowded surf.
Best
Surf Spots near Los Cabos – Between Todos Santos and the East Cape
La Pastora
Very fun break located a few miles
north of Todos Santos. If you can find La Pastora you will be blessed
with nice sand beach with fun rights and lefts and minimal crowd. To get
there, go north just east of the old Hotel California. At the bottom of
the hill, make a left and follow the dirt road several miles to the
north. Keep your eyes peeled for a poorly posted Pastora sign and fork
to the left. This will lead you to a sand lot (if you want to call it
that) where you can park and walk to the beach. Be careful of the sand
in non-4WD vehicles.
Pescadero ~ K60 (Turn off is located
near the K60 Sign on Highway 19)
Good reef break a few
miles south of Todos Santos. There is a restaurant here where you can
get food and drinks. The waves are fun and consistent. Be careful
paddling in and out. The reefs are covered with sea urchins. Best bet is
to paddle in and out at the beach to the south of the break.
Playa Cerritos ~ K64
Playa Cerritos is one
of the better breaks on the West Cape and also the most crowded.Playa Cerritos offers a right point if the swell direction is
right, but usually functions more as a good beach break.
Monumentos
Monumentos offers an
excellent left point located just east of Cabo San Lucas. To get there
follow the highway 1 east from Cabo San Lucas. At the first major hotel
on the corridor there is a statue or monument at the entrance. The break
is located below the hotel’s restaurant on the point. Monumentos is
one of the few waves on the Corridor that can pull in the west swells
and will often have size when everywhere else is totally flat. Watch out
for shallow rocks.
Bahia Chileno
There is no surfing
here, but I find that I must mention this beach, as it is one of the
nicest non-secluded beaches in Baja. This is actually where they take
you when you pay $50 to $100 per person to go on an exotic snorkeling
trip. It is much easier and cheaper to simply drive there or take a bus
or taxi. To get to Bahia Chileno, take Highway 1 east from Cabo San
Lucas approximately 10 miles east of town. Just before the Hotel Cabo
San Lucas, there is a small dirt parking lot with beach access. There is
a dive shop on the beach where you can rent snorkeling gear. The exotic
fish immediately offshore are beautiful and numerous. Bahia Chileno is
strongly recommended.
Zippers (Costa Azul)
Zippers is the
closest break to San Jose del Cabo. It is located just west of the town
and provides a fun, fast right. Unfortunately, if you are traveling to
Mexico to escape the rat race you will not be impressed with this over
crowded spot. On any given day it can be as crowded as any Southern
California hot spot. When there is good size from the south Zippers
sometimes connects up with the outer reefs to provide a very nice long
ride.
Shipwrecks
If you choose to go
east of San Jose del Cabo, 4WD is highly recommended. Make sure your
tank is full and that you let others know where you are going. There are
no services from San Jose del Cabo to north of Cabo Pulmo. What you will
find is some of the most amazing coastal scenery you can imagine. When
you dream about journeying off on a surf adventure this is the type of
place you dream about. The first named break is Shipwrecks. There is no
longer a shipwreck here, which makes it difficult to locate. Keep your
eyes peeled for Rancho Rocas del Mar. Shipwrecks is located to the
south. If there is not a strong south you probably do not want to risk
the drive unless you are content with simply seeing beautiful scenery.
There are additional breaks as you
continue to the northeast. If you choose to continue up this road it is
best to go with someone who knows the area well. Additional breaks
include Nine Palms, and Boca del Salado. If you continue north, Cabo
Pulmo has some of the best diving in Baja and a live coral reef. The
paved road restarts about 15 miles north of Cabo Pulmo and eventually
allows you to return to Highway 1 for a much easier return trip.
